Title: Van Halen - I'm The One (partial cover)
Post by: Bereet on July 28, 2017, 03:15:14 AM
Hi there guys,

Here's one I am pretty proud of (even though I have cheated).

I'm a big Van Halen fan, but I find his phrasing difficult to copy.

Well, I received a YouTube video about this where a guy teaches you how to play it, and I had a go.  I managed to get it up to the first solo (where it goes really mental for me).

I could only get it up to about 60% speed though accurately, before mistakes would creep in.

So, this is where I cheated.  I saved it at 1.6x speed in Reaper to see what it might sound like if I got it up to speed and this is what the result was.

So I am going through the Peavey Wolfgang Special into PODxt with a Van Halen setting from customtone into Reaper and saved at 1.6x.

I love the tone, and I love how, to my ears, I'm playing a van Halen song as accurately as I can.

Brillant! Speeding it up to achieve your take. That sounded very good.
I'm getting ideas now...

 :thankyou:

Thanks Pete.  It's not a habit I want to get into, it's just that it will take me a while to get this one up to speed.  The whole shuffle on this one and string skipping.  Ed really had something to say with this song, he really wanted to announce how bloody good and fast he was, and he did.

I had also emplyed the use of Riffstation.  A great, great tool.  You can slow down mp3s really easily.  So I was using the YouTube lesson and then actually playing along with Eddie at 60% speed, which was brilliant.

I was also using it to try to pick apart a solo by Thunder.  As there are no tabs for this, it's the only approach I will have to me.

I shall have to take this approach for some of the easier Van Halen songs and so have a full song at full speed without cheating in my arsenal.  I mean, Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love or Panama should be doable.  They aren't as blisteringly fast and difficult as this one.

Thanks for listening mate.

You have balls, Chris. At least you take a stab at some VH tunes. I love VH and never really learned any, well...I did try to learn Jaime's Cryin back in high school.   :D

Pete, it's Dave, not Chris.   :D

If I were Chris, I would have no problem playing Van Halen songs.

Gotta keep trying, but also get some more "normal" songs and skills back in my repertoire.

Sounded good, love the tone.  I may have to give this a try as well.

Sorry, I knew exactly who I was addressing. Packing and taking care of all last minute things as I am about to head out for holiday. Will try to pop in and on FB.

Hee hee.

No problem.  I'll take being called Chris as a compliment.

Have a good break.
