Title: Thinking about starting an online band... Drummers? Live or skilled sequencers?
Post by: WIG on September 29, 2010, 01:15:31 PM
First off, I'm thinking that finding a drummer who can roll with the in's and out's of collaborating online is a place to start.  An experienced sequencer could work too if there aren't any live drummers here?

Looking for something between a "Clutch" to Johnny Cash ala the 'American' albums style drummer?  Hard Rock meets, Southern Rock, meets Country Pickin type stuff?

The idea would be to form a permanent group of members from across the globe interested in sharing credit EQUALLY for all creative input (I think this helps to avoid arguments up front over credit).  Maybe some covers with our own signature, but mainly focused on original material?

This is really an experiment more than anything else, not even sure it will work or not.  Figure it can't hurt to try it out though.  I have a handful of tunes in this vein that are fairly well together to start with while bringing in ideas from everyone collectively?

Sounds like a good idea to me. Get to play without the hassles of travel and traffic.

Interested in a guitar position?  Play any slide?  Dig the influences?

Cool Tim!  Sounds good!  I'm hoping everyone could have a chance to mix it up and dabble in this or that if they want.  So bringing more than one thing to the table is a GOOD thing.  I'd be up for some rhythm guitar, bass, and I hope for sure some vocals.  The style I lean towards calls for a multiple vocalist scenario, so in the interim you and I could start making some music as a duo while we search for some others?  Check out www.soundclick.com/raisingdeadeye , there are some tunes I want to shape further.  They may seem like there was a production in mind, but they really are demos and nothing that is completely written in stone.  Point me to some of yours, I'd love to check them out.

Hi Tim, I can send you some drums I have for Finnley and we can do some guitars off each other and do the dual vocal thing just as a 'get our feet wet' working with each other exercise?

Hi guys. If there is anything I can do, I´d love to be a part of it. Bass, slide guitar, guitar, mixing, drums, whatever. Well, no singing for me, as my voice is a bit disturbing even to my dogs, :D

This seems to be moving along pretty good guys. Tony would be a great add in for this project. He can play that thing! Really great idea Wig.

I'd certainly be up for collaborating on something like this. I'm not much of a drummer tho :D
But you know I love clutch and cash's "american" albums!

Hi Tony!  Do you play drums, can you record them?  You're more than welcome to join in elsewhere too.

And Naif... Yesterday you would have had a PM, I planned to invite you to this knowing that we both enjoy this style, BUT................ I cut the tip of my finger off in a chop saw yesterday.  No joke.  Sat in the ER most of yesterday.  So... I'm on the disabled list for at least 2-4 weeks.  Hopefully we can still get something started while I'm mending.  Further up I mentioned trying to run some test patterns with a song called "Old John Finnley" from my soundclick link.  Let me know if you guys want to take a crack at it, I can def do some vocals if I'm still not able to play yet.  I can tab it out if you guys want to give it a spin.

Tim I checked out your tunes, thought they were great.  I thought 'want you back', 'Time Slip', 'Dancing in the Moonlight' and 'Bottle it up and Go' all could work well with the styles discussed.  Great stuff.

Here you go guys... this is the same drum track as the recording on the soundclick page, but with a different kit plugged in (believe it's the EZDrummer Nashville kit).  I also attached the tab.  Just a warning, I've never tabbed anything for anyone, so hopefully it makes sense, but don't hesitate to ask if it doesn't add up.  Tim, why don't you take the first crack at it and then if Per or Tony are interested in laying down some bass or another guitar part we can keep building on it.  Since I'm fairly useless otherwise til the hand heals... anyone mind if I mix this one?

Am I too late to jump in here :)
I can play the odd mediocre bit of lead sometimes, little bit of lapsteel. When I can eventually get hold of a GK2 pickup my GR9 synth is ready to go as well.

Hey Stevie, I've always thought the drums to your tracks were well put together, would you be interested in some sequencing?  I think a few of us are pretty good at it that have shown interest here... maybe we could just have a rotating line up, rather than a dedicated drummer/sequencer?  Everyone gets to dabble in a little of this, little of that?

Errrr----Wig,I think you may have me confused with Steve G? :)
My sequencing stinks, at the mo. Trying to find the time to get to grips with it.
I may be able to come up with some words from time to time though, but don't ask me to sing 'em, I think it'd probably break a Vocal Auto Tune programme :D

A rhythm is cool to start and then we can let Tony and Per have some fun with it?  Then you and I can talk about the 'call and answer' vocal approach and some ideas to add above the original idea.

I just took a look and a listen to this, and my mind went off into a spin with different ideas and rearrangements  ;D
Sadly I have to go sleep now, and won't be home this weekend or most of next week. So it'll be a good while before I can get to work on any of it. But I got really inspired, and hopefully I can get back to that when I get home. Maybe you guys will have done some stuff on this by then that can get me even more inspired.

Very cool Per!  I think all in all, we should look at each tune as an evolution.  Just like in a band.  They grow and evolve.  I am also offline from Sunday to Friday of next week.

Tim, Let me know what you think of the drums.  To me... they lack some stuff... originality, build / dynamics, etc... the beat in spots is "eh".  Maybe you would prefer doing the guitar over a click and then pulling it out after?  Ultimately this is pobably weird that I'm not laying down a track to start (my hand).  I'm up for whatever ideas you guys have, this is all new territory so the process is obviously going to be interesting up front.

Can I ask you guys,..are the drums midi? If so,.i would be glad to do the drums once they are completely written out for the song. I can add in or take out whats needed,....if you guys want a hand with this project. I can get killer drum sounds using midi. If not,.that's cool too. I'm looking forward to hearing this either way.

Hey guys, for the sake of organizing a specific thread for each tune, so we can all stay in the same loop together, I'm going to create a thread called V-Band (virtual Band) and the song name / tune idea.  Take a look for...

V-Band - Old John Finnley

We can catch up on where things are at and ideas to evolve the track, etc...

I've been in a bit of a slump lately, when it comes to recording. But today I did the mp3 of the month contest thing and had a lot of fun with that, so hopefully I'll be getting back into it and start to have a lot of fun with this soon, as well  :)

You and me both Naif!  Mine, unfortunately is a 'forced' slump with the finger problem, but prior to that I don't have enough of an excuse.

Here's the new thread for this tune to discuss ideas for the tune...

http://www.stubble.org/index.php?topic=158.0

We'll keep this one to hopefully pick up a willing drummer or professed sequencer.

Broken link. I guess due to the new "name" for the site.... :p

Been messing around with the tune with the drums. It begs for some slow tremolo in it. But the drum roll you built after the start seems to be early upon.

The TAB you posted I´m sure it is as accurate as it gets, but man, me and my squared mind doesn´t get it. I will keep trying to fit the melody there.

Not sure what you mean about the drum roll?  it's early?  I built them in FruityLoops, it's the machine keeping the time, not me.  Those are all midi loops slapped together, nothing custom.  I think we're going to throw those drums in the can.  I hear ya about the tremolo... right up your alley! 8)
