Jazz Improvisation?
« on: September 25, 2010, 09:55:57 AM »
Hey People,

I have been playing in my school's big band for a number of years now (as guitarist)... just wondering how I could improvise over jazz chord progressions?
I'm stuck with the blues scale!

Thanks,
AJ

Break it down. Use the chords.

My guitar teacher said stuff like 'myxolidian mode (not sure if I spelt that right) on the major chords, minor scales on the minor chords'... do you have to adjust the scales to each chords... or can you just play what's in your head without knowing the chords?

Hey Song sage ,,one method i am learning at the moment that will help with all scales is the CAGE system.Jammie Humphries with lick library has 3 dvd's out that explain this sytem and why it works so well. The other thing that the cage system helps with is Jazz Comping which is really cool once you get into it think Wes Montgomery style.

heres an introduction but i must admit the Lick Library dvd's are the best.
